Ikea Floating Shelves

We went to Ikea and I had them in my basket until I spoke with an employee who advised me that I needed some additional hardware to install. So I left them there..and it was hard. But then I did some online research and I think I read that you have to use these major BIG FAT screws that go in the wall and mess it all up. That scares me. Has anyone used them? Do you recommend them? What am I to do? My books are getting out of line in my office and something has got to give.

THESE SCARE ME!

I wish I had an Ikea near me b/c I've always loved those shelves.

I'm guessing that the brackets for these (since they can hold quite a bit of weight) would need to be drilled into studs in the wall or they would require substantial "dry wall" screws to help anchor the bracket (so the shelves don't come crashing down and/or tear out the drywall).

These definitely leave sizeable holes in your wall, but it's nothing that a little patching compound wouldn't fix. Just make sure you have leftover paint to patch up spots if you decide to remove the shelves (once, I ran out and had to patch a wall where I had run out of paint--the new batch didn't match the wall at all).

Hey girl! I actually love the floating shelves, but I agree with you that they mess up the walls bigtime! I don't know if you have looked at the ladder looking shelving units for a unique look in your place. I got mine at Crate and Barrel (if you look online, its under the entertainment center link) or I know they carry them at Target...They are between 100-150 and is a great way to add some unique style to your place! Let me know what you think!

Thanks for the comment on my blog! I love yours as well! :)

I've never had floating shelves but I do love the way they look. Good Luck!!

Oooh look at all that lovely storage, but yes, those big screws scare me too! I am worried that I would put them in the wrong spot and then get dark ugly holes all over my wall! BUt I am sure you can do it!

i bet they use molly bolts. you dont want your shelves to sag. i think its worth it, you can fix it later, but i bet those shelves will be up there for awhile!

You have been on it these last 2 days with the posting! LOL

Those shelves are cute but are hard to get to work right. I put them up for a client and they put major holes in the walls and you definitely need extra support to make sure they won't fall down. If you have the right supports and definitely in a stud then you are good, if not don't do it...unless you have lots of butterflies. So, get your "stud" to work it out. ;-)

What were the screws he advised to use? I want these floating shelves too but Im afraid for the same reason. I don't have studs in my walls since they are all plaster so Im not sure if I can install these at all.

I have these shelves all over my home...(I move them from room to room)check the blog for photos...I've used them in my clients homes also...(doing it again this weekend)...they are really easy to put up...but you do need to find the studs in the wall...that's it...don't be afraid, try one...

I installed one of these Ikea shelves in my basement. It required 16 heavy duty drywall anchors, like freckles chick mentioned. If I had put them in the wrong spot, they would have left 1/4 to 1/2 inch holes that would have to be patched with drywall compound. Luckily, I did it right the first time!

It's totally worth it though-- just take your time, read the directions thoroughly, mark up the wall with a pencil, and have a friend on hand to help you measure and hold the level, etc. (I actually installed the shelf alone, but it was very difficult to hold it with one hand and measure with the other!! lol)
