What I Have Learned Thus Far

Since I started blogging I have learned a tremendous amount more about design, and creating a fabulous space. I always look to be different from the next in some way, and I see that it is paying off in my own home. We had a gathering the other day, and we received some wonderful compliments on my design.  The lessons that I have learned, now merge with spaces for potential clients that want that TamStyles effect on a doable budget.

So here are my design lessons:

1.) Long gone are the day of buying "living room sets" and "bedroom sets".... BYE BYE, it's been nice

2.) Buying in pieces gives the room more character. Like friends meeting up. Start with a sofa and build from there

3.) Patterns such as IKAT are timeless and look great on a small sofa, chair, and of course on a pillow

4.) If you don't have built in bookcases, buy one and adorn it with fabulous books and things of interest

5.) Stripes on a rug add some jazz where ever it's placed

6.) You cant go wrong with a chandelier as a light source. Instant glam where ever it is added. Kitchen, bathroom, bedroom...no rules

7.) Vintage redone is totally IN. Thrifting is a must

8.) Gray is the new beige. The right Gray though

9.) Black on the wall says your not afraid to take risks. I am working on that now

10.) Having a "milk" piece is essential. They are easy to find, and easy on the wallet if you look in the right place

11.) Trellis is a yes

12.) Chalkboard creations say: "I CAN DO THIS." It's easy to do. The hard part is trying to decide what to paint it on

All great lessons...for me it's hard to get away from the sets, but as soon as I replace no more matchy.

Totally agree with the chandeliers and trellis comments - instant vintage glam!

Love number 1 and number 6. When I first moved out I made the mistake of buying a bedroom set and dining table with matching chairs, and I hate both now. I just bought 4 chairs for $2.50 to replace at my table and I'm so much happier. It's always better to mix and match!

It has gotten too expensive to buy furniture sets these days. In our bedroom, we bought each piece at separate stores and made sure they matched in color of wood. They look like they belong together :)

Good post! I have commited the crime of matchy sets though. I have no decorating sense, so that is why if they match, I buy it. I just moved into a new house and I am trying to find my style still, so your post has some good ideas!

I agree with all of these except the trellis print, I think I am over it. You are dead on about the chandeliers though!

Sort of like fashion, where matchy matchy is a no no!!

Furniture sets are BORING. It says that you want to look like everybody else.

Bedroom sets are the least sexiest things on the planet.

I say the more eclectic the better!

I can't imagine buying a furniture set anymore! I think the only way I would is if I distributed the pieces among different rooms. Great lessons!

Great post! I am also over the matchy-matchy look. It's a little more work to mix it up (for me), but so worth it!

Number 1, just totally made me rethink my plans. You are so right. Now I've got to go find a good couch because I am too in love with the chairs. Thanks!
