Skype and Pie

I had the best time Friday night on Skype with my long time blog friend Kay* of Apartment #412. It was great finally putting a moving face, and voice with the photos. She had a chance to “meet” my  kids, and I had a chance to meet her family to. We both learned so much, and the conversation was stimulating which I loved. Modern day technology allowing me in Texas to talk, and see a friend in Canada for FREE is just great. So some how we got on the topic of food. We talked about Southern food, and Canadian food. There was a big moment when I asked her had she had Chess Pie before. We then ended up running around showing foods from our pantry's on the web cam, and laughing at what we didn’t have. At any rate she said she was going to try and make the pie, and then I received an email about the butter. I then thought it would be great to put together a post that would give details on this fabulous pie, just in time for the holidays for everyone. I usually make about 8 of these pies, and people walk away with whole pies as they give their goodbye hugs. So please try it, you will love it. PROMISE. Tamara Styles GUARANTEED.

Ingredients

3 eggs

1 1/2 cup sugar

1/2 cup buttermilk

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 stick of melted butter

2 tablespoon flour

1 frozen pie shell

Directions

Pre heat oven to 350 degrees.

Add all ingredients to bowl. Mix well with mixer under smooth, and silky. Pour most of mixture into pie crust. I usually don’t fill it until its in the oven. I place it in the oven, and then take a measuring cup and pour the rest of the mixture into the crust to prevent me from spilling it. Otherwise your hands would be shaky, and you will waste some of the mixture as its in the pie shell if you do it all before it hits the oven. Let it cook a minimum of 50 mins. I usually gage based on the photo above of the “split”. When I first started making this pie, I was not letting it cook long enough and it would be runny. Don’t let the “burnt” look discourage, or fool you into thinking it’s overdone.

HAVE YOU MADE THIS PIE BEFORE? OR DO YOU LIKE CHESS PIE? I am really curious if its just a Southern dessert, or do people like these pies all over.

Enjoy!

I'm a southern girl myself also from Dallas, and I have never tried this! I might have heard of it once or twice. Looking forward to trying it....

Ahhhhhhh so AWESOME!

I bought all the ingredients to make Chess Pie (no one here I asked had EVER heard of it!) and now my brothers keeping asking "when are you going to make that pie!?!?!?" If I wasn't going to the gym for a hardcore workout I'd do it today - as it stands I'll probably do it tomorrow :)

And I totally agree. Technology is so incredible, eh? I so enjoyed our conversation (I've been working on some of the things we talked about) and getting to actually 'see' you. I can't wait to see what you do next - it will be incredible. & your family is totally adorable.

I can't wait for our next Skype session. Your Canadian/Jamaican care package is being sent off this week....or next at the very latest!

xoxo

I have been on a chess pie, or buttermilk pie, kick. I've made two in three weeks and love making them in small little individual pie tins. I'm in New York now, but am originally from Dallas, and I miss those things.

I love chess pie. I live in San Antonio and there are a few places where you can get this. I'm going to use your recipe though and make this pie over the holidays. Yum!

yall PLEASE make this pie. the world must know. it is a fattening piece of heaven, but still...its sweet, and probably not for those that it healthy all the time. the sugar and butter (cause there is alot) porbably will give you some type of ache...head, stomach..knees, and toes, knees, and toes..(joke)...I just dont want anyone to feel sick over the sugar..but for the holidays we should all have a little piece of something off the sweet charts right?

I have never heard of this, but I think I'll give it a try. My bf hates eggs, so to keep from eating it all by myself, I'll wait until we have a family function. :)

I had never heard of this pie until last night! ;) I saw it on your bf and thought a typo-so asked my hubby if he'd ever had Cheese Pie lol...then realized it really was Chess-to which he said he had...he'd had a great one and a nasty one lol...prob solid vs runny?!
I was excited to make one and already saved a recipe last night-but as usual was worried if it was a good recipe compared to the other Chess pie recipes listed...I'll be making yours instead to ensure a great pie for my hubby!

I am a Texas girl, also from Dallas but living in LA now. I do love this pie. You're reminding me of something else to hip these West Coasters to! Glad you noted that it must cook solid. I have had some bad ones over the years and being that I don't like eggs, eating a runny chess pie is not an option. I have an aunt Joyce that bakes this pie like no other. Thanks for making me home sick...lol!
